The name "chief" blanket may refer to the price of the original rugs.  They were an expensive item and only the well to do could afford one.  Most of the early representations are of women with the chief blankets than men.  The chief blankets go through three phases.  most of our rugs will be the third phase which has an emphasis on the center with a full diamond and quarter diamonds along the sides.  Some collectors have added a fourth phase and various half phases for rugs that do not fit the common designs.
