The area of Crystal is on the western slope of the Chuska Mountain
range. The Navajo term for the area is Tonlt'ili meaning "where
the crystal water flows out." It has been an established area
for fine weaving since just before the turn of the century. The rugs
for which it was famous originally were aniline-dyed and made with
elaborate patterns. Around the mid- 1940's the borderless,
vegetal-dyed designs associated with the region of Crystal appeared.
This area's style of weaving is sometimes confused with the Chinle
and Wide ruins patterns.
